The other day Tim Berry posted an article on How Not To Get Hired Via Craigslist. One issue he talked about was that the kind of ego it takes to be a top executive requires a little bit of cockiness. It’s a good thing for people in charge to have confidence in their own abilities, and in the decisions they make. That confidence can’t help but show through in their attitudes, and the way they are perceived by others.
I was thinking about how that relates to you standing in front of potential investors and pitching your restaurant idea. How do you want to be perceived? What attitude do you want the investors to see?
While noone wants to deal with someone who is overly arrogant, you need to be able to project confidence when you are talking about your plan. This isn’t the time for timidity. You have to be able to show the investors that you are the right person for this job. If you can’t show that you are confident in your ability to do this, why would they have confidence? When you face the people that you want to convince to bankroll your restaurant, square your shoulders, look them in the eyes, and project the confidence that says “I will not fail!”
